Jika di ibaratkan sebagai bangunan, unsur intrinsik adalah komponen dari bangunan tersebut. Lack dalam unsur ini akan membuat cerpen menjadi tidak berbobot dan juga gagal.

Ada beberapa unsur intrinsik dalam cerpen yang sebaiknya kamu ketahui, seperti:

1. Tema

Unsur intrinsik cerpen yang pertama adalah tema. Tema adalah nyawa dari cerpen yang hendak kamu buat. Ini adalah gagasan mendasar yang akan membangun cerita dari idea yang kamu miliki. Tema memiliki sifat umum dan dapat di ambil dari tema sekitar, tergantung maksud dari cerita yang hendak kamu bangun.

2. Tokoh dan penokohan

Unsur kedua adalah tokoh (karakter) dan penokohan (characterization). Untuk tokoh, kamu bisa menentukan siapa saja tokoh yang akan bermain di dalam cerpen yang sedang kamu buat, misalnya seperti John, Michael, atau lainnya.

Sedang penokohan atau characterization adalah watak dari tokoh tersebut. Nah, penokohan ini di bagi menjadi beberapa pilihan, yaitu tokoh protagonis atau pemeran utama dalam cerita, tokoh antagonis atau lawan dari tokoh utama (biasanya berlawanan sifat), tritagonis atau tokoh penengah, dan figuran atau tokoh tambahan.

3. Alur

Alur termasuk unsur yang sangat penting di dalam cerpen. Alur harus ada di dalam cerpen karena ini akan menentukan jalannya cerita dalam cerpen yang hendak kamu buat. Ada beberapa tahapan alur yang harus ada dalam sebuah cerita, seperti pengenalan, penanjakan, klimaks, anti klimaks, dan tahap penyelesaian.

Selain itu, alur secara umum di bagi menjadi beberapa tipe, yakni alur maju, mundur, dan campuran.

4. Setting

Setting adalah tambahan informasi di dalam cerita. Setting di bagi menjadi beberapa hal, seperti setting tempat, waktu, dan suasana.

5. Sudut pandang

Sudut pandang sering juga di sebut sebagai strategi penyampaian cerita dari penulis. Nah, oleh karena itu, kamu sebaiknya memahami tentang detail dari sudut pandang ini. Sudut pandang di bagi menjadi beberapa hal, yakni sudut pandang pertama, kedua, serta ketiga.

6. Gaya bahasa

Gaya bahasa berhubungan dengan diksi. Sebagaimana sudah di bahas sebelumnya, pengolahan bahasa akan mempengaruhi hasil dari cerpen bahasa Inggris yang hendak kamu buat.

Unsur Ekstrinsik Cerpen

Unsur kedua adalah unsur ekstrinsik cerpen atau beberapa unsur yang terdapat di luar cerita. Nah, unsur ini merupakan pendukung dari cerpen berbahasa Inggris yang kamu buat. Adapun beberapa unsur ini adalah latar belakang masyarakat, latar belakang penulis, dan juga amanat dari cerita.

Ketiga unsur ini memang tidak wajib, hanya saja akan membuat cerita terlihat lebih nyata dan menarik.
